Sovtek 5Y3GT: use the model-specific rectifier reference

The Sovtek 5Y3GT is an octal, two-anode full-wave rectifier for equipment designed for this model. Its power-supply behaviour must not be assumed to reproduce the voltage drop, start-up response or sound of every historical 5Y3.

Published electrical information

The official Sovtek sheet linked by Electro-Harmonix uses a 5 V heater reference and gives a heater-current range of 1.6–2.2 A. It lists 140 mA maximum average rectified current and 1550 V maximum reverse-voltage amplitude. Its connection drawing distinguishes heater and cathode connections; use that exact diagram rather than a generic historical description.

These manufacturer figures are not individual measurements or recommended operating targets. The sheet’s rectified-current example depends on the stated transformer, load and reservoir capacitance. It does not establish a universal permissible capacitor size or guarantee a particular supply voltage.

Replacement and condition

Do not treat a GZ34/5AR4, 5U4GB or another octal rectifier as an automatic substitute. A qualified technician must check the connection diagram, heater winding, circuit voltages, reservoir capacitance and effective series resistance against the equipment service documentation. A rectifier does not regulate voltage by itself or guarantee reduced stress in every amplifier.
